University of Sydney head Mark Scott apologises to Jewish students

 




Mark Scott, the head of the University of Sydney has apologised to Jewish students and staff, admitting he "failed them" in his handling of a pro-Palestinian student encampment. 

He told an inquiry into anti-Semitism on campus he declined an earlier offer from New South Wales Police to use the riot squad to remove the students.

Vice chancellors from the University of Melbourne, UNSW Sydney, Monash University and the University of Adelaide also fronted the inquiry. 


Sydney University one of the worst places to be Jewish

 




Zachary Morris, said Sydney University was “one of the worst places” to be a Jewish student, adding the vice chancellor had “failed his students”.

Jewish groups and vice chancellors will be among those to appear at the Senate inquiry today into shadow education minister Sarah Henderson’s private Senator’s bill to establish a judicial inquiry into antisemitism on campuses.


Yasmin Catley says Border Force responsible for Sydney's "massive appetite" for cocaine

 




The NSW Police Minister, Yasmin Catley, has taken a swipe at the Australian Border Force and the federal government for allowing drugs into the country after a state police operation laid bare Sydney's massive appetite for cocaine. 

Indexation of pensions and payments

 




Indexation of pensions and payments including the Age Pension, Disability Support Pension and Carer Payments, Commonwealth Rent Assistance, JobSeeker, and Parenting Payments will increase from today.

The twice-a-year indexation increase, will see the age pension, disability support pension and carer payment increase by $28.10 a fortnight for singles, and $42.40 a fortnight for couples. 


Covid pandemic started in wet market

 




Scientists believe they've uncovered the true origin of the Covid pandemic.

A major international study published today insists that the virus began life in a ‘wet market’ in Wuhan, China, rather than in a scientific experiment. 

A raccoon dog, which was sold live at the market and is now thought to be one of the main culprits in spreading the virus to humans. 

 


John Howard said Donald Trump not fit to lead

 




Former Prime Minister John Howard, 85, said the former US president's refusal to accept the results of the 2020 US election made him effectively unfit to lead the country again. 

'I think Donald Trump should have left the field when the umpire's finger went up,' he said.


Helio Taiyang Richardson extradited to Sydney from Thailand

 



Helio Taiyang Richardson, 62, a kinesiologist, was arrested in Thailand and has been extradited to Sydney.  He was charged with rape in 2018 and fled the country before court proceedings began.

Kinesiology is in alternative medicine claimed to be able to diagnose illness and choose treatment by testing muscles for strength and weakness.

Landmark decision for eligible parents

 




New parents who take paid time off work will receive superannuation contributions from next year.  

Landmark legislation passed in the parliament today, means eligible parents with babies born or adopted after July 1, 2025 will be paid an additional 12 per cent of their paid parental leave as a super payment for up to 26 weeks.


Tanya Plibersek rules out "climate trigger"

 




Environment Minister Tanya Plibersek has ruled out inserting a “climate trigger” into her Nature Positive laws, falling into line behind Prime Minister Anthony Albanese after he intervened to take the Greens-backed policy off the table.

The resolution was passed with 124 votes in favour and 14 against. Australia was one of 43 countries to abstain, including the UK, Canada and Germany.

Walkie-talkie explosions in Lebanon

 



The Lebanese Ministry of Communications identified the exploding devices as Icom V82s, a type of handheld transceiver, adding that they were not purchased through the official distributor and were not licensed by the ministry. Icom did not immediately return a request for comment to NBC News, but a sales manager for Icom America told The Associated Press it appears that explosive devices were knock-offs...........

Help To Buy First Home Buyer Scheme vote delayed until November

 




The federal government has been unable to bring on a vote on its Help to Buy first home buyer scheme.  The PM has accused the Greens of teaming up with the Coalition to frustrate its housing agenda.

The Coalition has argued Australians would not want the federal government to co-own their houses.

Yesterday afternoon, Adam Bandt announced the party would move a motion to delay the bill for two months, which passed this morning.

SpaceX deal with United for in-flight Wi-Fi

 



SpaceX nearly doubled its backlog of Starlink in-flight Wi-Fi orders with last week’s United Airlines deal.

The satellite internet arm of Elon Musk’s space company is pushing into the in-flight connectivity, or IFC, market. Last week, United said it will outfit its more than 1,000 planes with Starlink and won’t charge customers for the Wi-Fi.


Canberra woman scammed out of $1.6 million

 



Seven scammers arrested yesterday were hired by an international syndicate to open and manage fraudulent bank accounts in Australia "to make the scam look more legitimate".   Those accounts were then used by overseas scammers pretending to be bank officials.

Two people from Melbourne were arrested yesterday, charged with transferring more than $14m overseas between August 2022 and February 2024, and allegedly received commissions in return.

Hezbollah pagers blow up in Lebanon



Militant group Hezbollah promised to retaliate against Israel after detonating pagers across Lebanon yesterday (Tuesday)  killing nine people and wounding 2800 others, many critical. 

Hezbollah fighters have been using pagers as a low-tech means of communication in an attempt to evade Israeli location-tracking.

PM leaves open the possibility of a double dissolution election

 



This morning Anthony Albanese urged the Coalition and Greens to pass housing and environmental bills in the Senate.  He left open the possibility of a double dissolution election over the stalled legislation.   

“Well, we’ll wait and see,” he said when it was suggested Labor would fare poorly in such an election.


China frees David Lin, American pastor wrongfully detained for 18 years

 


 


In a surprise move, Beijing freed the 68-year-old David Lin on Sunday after he spent nearly 20 years in prison in a case the U.S. government and his family have always dismissed as baseless.  

Lin entered China in 2006 and attempted to establish a Christian training center in Beijing.

Environment Minister Tanya Plibersek last week sent industry into a panic after confirming she was in talks with the Greens to pass controversial laws to establish a new Environment Protection Agency (EPA).

Ryan Wesley Routh has been arrested and named as the suspected would-be assassin.

Aaron Mendis, not guilty of child sex charges because of "sexsomnia"

 




Aaron Mendis, a Sydney youth minister has been found not guilty of child sex charges after a judge found he was probably suffering "sexsomnia".

Judge Phillip Mahony acquitted Mendis of all charges on the basis that "it was a reasonable possibility at the time of each alleged offence that the accused was asleep, and suffering from sexsomnia".

Two Sydney people dead and two hospitalised after using cocaine

 



Two people recently died of heroin overdoses after using what they thought was cocaine at a house party at Glebe while another two people were hospitalised.

The Health Departmemt today (Friday) warned people to carry naloxone – the life-saving medication used to treat opioid overdoses.

Bruce Lehrmann back in court

 



Former Liberal staffer Bruce Lehrmann's lawyers have filed an updated appeal in the Federal Court, challenging the entire judgment which found on the balance of probabilities Mr Lehrmann had raped Brittany Higgins.

The court concluded the most likely version of events was that Ms Higgins was too drunk to consent to sex with Mr Lehrmann, and that he was reckless.

His appeal will return to the Federal Court in October....................

Peter Dutton failed to hold senior Defence officers to account when Defence Minister

 



Defence Minister Richard Marles and his predecessor Peter Dutton have tussled in a war of words over the Government’s decision to strip medals from up to nine officers who served in Afghanistan but not hold the most senior leaders to account.

Mr Marles hit back later accusing Mr Dutton of being the one who failed to hold senior officers to account.

“When he was the defence minister, he actively suspended making a decision in relation to command accountability,” Mr Marles said……

Mother who stabbed her two sons to death had history of mental illness

 




Trish Smith, the mother who stabbed her two sons to death in the Blue Mountains was sacked by her employer in January 2020 for mental health issues.  She fought the decision and represented herself but lost the case.

Commissioner Muir dismissed her application to be reinstated in November 2023 but in March this year she applied for leave to appeal, which was refused.

Rolf Harris' widow dies aged 93

 




The widow of paedophile TV star Rolf Harris has died aged 93 - fifteen months after her husband. 

Alwen Hughes stood by Harris after he was sentenced to five years and nine months in jail in 2014 for 12 indecent assaults on four underage girls between 1968 and 1986.
