Cultural Burns

For thousands of years, the Indigenous people of Australia set fire to the land.

Long before Australia was invaded and colonised by Europeans, fire management techniques - known as "cultural burns" - were being practised.  The cool-burning, knee-high blazes were designed to happen continuously and across the landscape.

Kings Highway finally opens

The Kings Highway, which links Canberra to Batemans Bay, will finally reopen this afternoon

The fires have rendered the main street of Braidwood empty, during the busiest time of year.

Melbourne couple flies Nazi flag

A Victorian couple is flying a flag featuring a swastika over their home in a small town in the state's north-west, reigniting calls to ban people publicly displaying the symbol.
The red and black flag, which has a swastika surrounded by several other Nazi-related symbols, has been flying for at least several weeks over a private property in the Mallee town of Beulah, about four hours from Melbourne.

Its presence has outraged several neighbours, who have complained to police, and has been condemned by both the state government and the opposition.

Gayle Woodford Inquest

The inquest into the murder of nurse Gayle Woodford has opened in Adelaide with the court hearing her killer had “slipped through the cracks” and should have been on the sex offenders register.
In November 2017, Dudley Davey lost his bid to have his jail sentence reduced. Davey was sentenced to life imprisonment with a non-parole period of 32 years for murdering and raping Ms Woodford and stealing her ambulance in South Australia's APY Lands in March 2016.

Iran's Oil Output

Rhonda and Charmaine from the Lake Tyers all-female, all-indigenous fire brigade.

"It's not that men aren't welcome – in fact we'd love the fellas to join us and help out!" Charmaine quips.

"Every now and then a fella comes along but they don't seem to last too long. I don't think they like taking orders from me," laughs the vivacious 52-year-old grandmother of three.
"We fought the Black Saturday bushfires, fires in Wilsons Promontory and Omeo. We've attended so many call-outs I've lost count," says Charmaine.
