Flying Fox Colony at Wingham Brush Reserve
By Nilmini De Silva ·  · From Pic of the Week
My partner and I have lived and worked out of a motorhome for more than 18 months and are always on the lookout for free camp sites.  We were excited to discover the Wingham Brush Reserve a few days ago. Not only does it provide free camping for self contained vehicles, it also has a fascinating reserve next door to explore. We had watched the flying foxes leave in their hundreds the night before and enjoyed a closer encounter in the morning. They were perched very high in the trees but I had fun photographing them with my 100-400mm lens. Flying foxes have had a mixed reputation in Australia but they play an important role in our ecosystem in helping to pollinate native plants. While most people consider them a nuisance, they would rather feast on native blossoms before they attacked your fruit trees. I loved this little guy, fast asleep on his perch, quite oblivious to my presence!      Published 01 Mar 2017.  Wingham NSW 2429

Mt Arapiles - Rock Climb
By Greg Gorter ·  · From Pic of the Week

Mt Arapiles is regarded as one of Australia's premier "Rock Climbing" locations. Rising sharply from the Wimmera plains to form part of the Tooan State Park, "The Arapiles" as its commonly known, not only has unique rock climbing faces, but also a variety of beautiful flora & fauna in the Wimmera district. Situated approx 10klm from the small town of Natimuk, the Arapiles immediately engage you as a prehistoric form of metamorphic rock faces as they rise to over 370m (1,210ft) above the skyline. The Aboriginal name for Arapiles is "Djurite".       Nikkor f 5.6 (200-500mm) lens   200mm @ f8, 1/20 - ISO 100     Published 24 Apr 2017.  Miga Lake VIC 3409
