Flying Fox
Colony at Wingham Brush Reserve
By Nilmini De Silva · · From Pic of the Week
My partner and I have lived and worked out of a motorhome for more than
18 months and are always on the lookout for free camp sites. We were
excited to discover the Wingham Brush Reserve a few days ago. Not only does it
provide free camping for self contained vehicles, it also has a fascinating
reserve next door to explore. We had watched the flying foxes leave in their
hundreds the night before and enjoyed a closer encounter in the morning. They
were perched very high in the trees but I had fun photographing them with my
100-400mm lens. Flying foxes have had a mixed reputation in Australia but they
play an important role in our ecosystem in helping to pollinate native
plants. While most people consider them a nuisance, they would rather
feast on native blossoms before they attacked your fruit trees. I loved this
little guy, fast asleep on his perch, quite oblivious to my presence! Published 01 Mar
