Louise Brewis cleans the Minton floor at St George’s Hall, Liverpool before it goes on display to the public.

The rarely seen handcrafted Victorian mosaic of over 30,000 Minton tiles was laid in 1852 but was covered by a wooden floor in the 1860s to preserve it against damage.

It takes 3 days to lift the floor by specialists and 2 days to clean.  It’s been 4 years since the last reveal and 10th time on display since the hall reopened in 2007.  Photograph: Peter Byrne/PA
