The family of Gilad Shalit had almost given up hope of ever seeing their son again but Israel made a bargain with the Palestinians that could come back to haunt them.
Gilad Shalit was free at last but he looked nothing like the boy who was taken prisoner five years ago. Speaking quietly in Hewbrew, he looked confused and unwell, painfully thin with sunken, hollow eyes.
His pale skin shows he has been deprived of sunlight and one can only imagine the stress and pain he has endured.
His freedom came at a very high price - 1,000 Palestinian prisoners, many of whom are members of terrorist groups - 1,000 men who have pledged to destroy Israel are now free to pursue their goal.
You could say it was a bad deal - 1,000 men in exchange for one young soldier, but thoughts of tomorrow are forgotten as the people of Israel are overwhelmed by the joy of his return.
