Bashar was never meant to rule

 



Hafez al-Assad (front row) dreamed of first-born son Bassel (back row, centre) continuing the family dynasty. Bashar was never meant to rule.  

But on a foggy morning in 1994 the 31-year-old army colonel wasn’t wearing a seatbelt and died in a car accident.
