The President's Cup 2011

Tiger Woods, ranked 50th in the world proved US captain Fred Couples right yesterday when he beat Aaron Baddeley to give the US an 18-14 lead. Woods blasted out of a deep bunker on the 15th to within 2 feet to clinch the win for the Americans. Couples was among the first to greet him, the man he called "the best player in the world forever." Hunter Mahan was another trump card for Couples who thumped our Jason Day.

Greg Norman was among those who questioned Couples' decision to go with Tiger instead of major winner Keegan Bradley but Norman's two selections, Aaron Baddeley and Robert Allenby only produced 1.5 points. Norman is unlikely to be at the next President's Cup to be held at Muirfield Village in Ohio in 2013.

Adam Scott with girlfriend Ana Ivanovic yesterday

World No 8 Adam Scott said the Internationals didn't have the same bond as the Americans. "I don't mean we're not friends, we just don't get to see each other all year like the American boys do. It's easy to come together under one flag - if you had 12 Aussie boys out there, it would be a different vibe but for first-timers who aren't familiar with it, until they get into it, they don't know what it's all about."

"It's disappointing not to get the cup this year but to have this event at home, it's been a fantastic week and one I'll remember for my whole career" he said. Adam is dating Ana Ivanovic, former world number one, considered to be the most beautiful tennis player in the world.

But for me, the star of the show was Jim Furyk, winning all five of his matches, including the first three with Phil Mickelson. The man with the unorthodox swing who, up until last week, had the worst year in a decade, showed everyone just how easy it was to take control of Royal Melbourne.

"I enjoy the team atmosphere and knowing Phil (Mickelson) for as many years as I have, I'm guessing he asked to play with me because one, I struggled so much this year and played poorly, probably the worst of anybody that's sitting up here right now" Furyk said.

Always the supporter of the underdog, Jim Furyk, we salute you.
