Homeless man living on Point Piper Beach

Point Piper is one of Sydney's most exclusive harbour suburbs where the median house price is almost $10 million.  Yet Joseph Wales lives there for free.

Although angry locals have complained to the council and want him removed, Mr Wales says he is the caretaker and security for Point Piper Kayak Centre, owned by Lance Connor.  And Mr Connor agrees.

"When someone kicks up a stink and wants to get rid of him, they live in Bellevue Hill or Dover Heights and have never been in his position.....so just leave him be" Mr Connor said.

So what's all the fuss about"

Woollahra councillor Andrew Petrie said "It's because he has allegedly been aggressive - if he's been scaring children and being offensive or threatening, whether deliberate or otherwise, it is an issue."

A staffer said the council had contacted Rose Bay police who said they hadn't received any complaints and that "being homeless is not an offence."

".....I am not an indoor person, I get claustrophobic so I just stay outdoors, it's good, it's peaceful, you can hear a pin drop some days, it is very meditative and probably the nicest part of the harbour" Mr Wales said.
