Rick Thorburn was overcome with grief as he helped carry the coffin of his 12 year old foster-daughter Tiahleigh Palmer at her funeral, so it was a shock to everyone when police arrested him yesterday for her murder.
But not only did police arrest him, but his wife and two sons.
And now we learn that after he was charged at the police station yesterday, he tried to harm himself and was rushed to hospital and he is now in an induced coma.
It is alleged that his son, 19 year old Trent admitted to a cousin on Facebook that he had slept with the 12 year old shortly before she disappeared and was worried she could be pregnant. Taihleigh is alleged to have told her foster-mother about it.
The Thorburn family
Trent Thorburn faced court today charged to incest, perjury and attempting to pervert the course of justice over Taihleigh's death. He was denied bail.
Today, Thorburn's wife Julene 54, and his other son Josh 20, have been charged with perjury and attempting to pervert the course of justice and released on bail.
Tiahleigh was last seen alive on 30 October 2015 when she was dropped off at school. Her body was found a week later on the banks of the Pimpama River on the northern Gold Coast.
There have been suggestions that children in foster care have been at risk for a long time, and this case demonstrates that a thorough investigation is long overdue.
