Jonathan
Van-Tam, deputy chief medical officer, at the press conference yesterday.
People under 30 will not be offered
the Oxford-AstraZeneca vaccine because of fears it may be linked to extremely
rare blood clots.
Britain’s medicine regulators have now
found 79 cases of concerning blood clots in people given the jab,
19 of whom died. All had the unusual combination of also having a low platelet
count — the same symptoms as those identified in other countries.
Describing the move as a “course
correction” in the vaccination program, Jonathan Van-Tam, the deputy chief
medical officer, emphasised that cases were very rare and the balance of risk
was still very much in favour of the jab.
He said that changing to the new regimen,
which would mean people aged 18-29 would received the Pfizer or Moderna
vaccine.
