Australia will get its first long-range strike missiles as well as new anti-ship weaponry as it scrambles to counter China’s rapid military build-up in the Pacific. The country will work with the United States, its closest military ally, to develop long-range hypersonic missiles that can travel at least five times the speed of sound. The new strike missiles will be based on warships and will be purchased under A$270 billion defence plans over the next decade.
