Blue Hyacinth Macaws at risk in Brazil


There are fears that the hyacinth macaws will starve because their food source has been destroyed by fire. ALAMY. Fires raging through the grasslands of central Brazil have destroyed a sanctuary housing nearly 1,000 examples of a rare macaw. The 61,000-acre Sao Francisco do Perigara ranch was home to the largest known population of the distinctive blue hyacinth macaw. In recent days 70 per cent of the farm’s vegetation has been destroyed by fire.
