Four damaged wooden chairs without backs or seats have fetched more than £1 million at auction.
Their appeal is that they were made in 1778 for the younger brother of Louis XVI, the ill-fated French king. Charles Philippe, the Count of Artois who became Charles X, ordered them to furnish the bedchamber at his Château de Bagatelle in the Bois de Boulogne.
