A 1,000ft Japanese cargo ship ran aground and spilt oil in a protected wetland in Mauritius after sailing close to shore so that its crew could connect to a mobile telephone signal, its operator has admitted.
Mitsui OSK Lines said that MV Wakashio, which was sailing without cargo from China to Brazil, strayed from its set course, 22 miles from the coast, to get reception. The crew relied on electronic nautical charts that failed to give an accurate indication of their position. Although they believed they were in 660ft of water, it was only 30ft deep.
