Maori heads once a prized collector's item in Britain.

In the early 19th century, tattooed, decapitated, and dried Maori heads became a coveted collector’s item across Britain. They are known as mokomokai, or Toi moko. The disturbing trade began in 1770 with Joseph Banks, the botanist who travelled with James Cook.
