Why Famous: Johnson became President after Lincoln's
assassination in 1865. Johnson's presidency began the period of Reconstruction
in the South, after the Confederacy was defeated and restored to the Union.
His opposition to rights for African Americans in the aftermath of the Civil
War is widely criticized and he is generally regarded as one of the worst
presidents in American history.
