Sir Bobby Charlton 83, the World Cup winner widely celebrated as England’s greatest footballer, has been diagnosed with dementia.
Sir Bobby is the fifth member of England’s 1966 World Cup-winning side to be diagnosed with the disease.
Lady Charlton said that she hoped in making her husband’s condition public it would help others affected by dementia. Last year a study funded by the Football Association found former professional players were five times more likely to die of Alzheimer’s.
