Deadly lyssavirus found in Queensland Bat

A case of lyssavirus – a deadly rabies-like illness – has been confirmed in a Queensland bat, as health authorities warn of a surge in flying fox bites and scratches. A juvenile little red flying fox was found in suburban Cairns and euthanised by a wildlife carer, who then sent its body to Brisbane for testing. Scientists from Biosecurity Queensland tested the corpse and found it was positive for Australian bat lyssavirus (ABLV) last Friday.
