On 28 October 1922, Mussolini planned a march on Rome. Prime Minister Luigi Facta wished to declare a state of siege, but this was overruled by King Victor Emmanuel III, who, fearing bloodshed and persuaded Facta to resign by threatening to abdicate.
In 1945 the man who had once strutted across the world stage, promising to bring glory back to Rome, was seen dangling by his heels, next to his mistress.
