Canberra, Australia

Yesterday, Donald Morley, 93, was sentenced to nine years in prison, with a non-parole period of four-and-a-half-years over the death of his wife of 69 years.

His barrister Jon White SC told the court that the act was a 'mercy killing' due to Mrs Morley's worsening dementia and his client's declining health.

But ACT Supreme Court judge Justice David Mossop showed no sympathy as he handed down his sentence.
