The wartime pope Pius XII ignored official advice that he should protest against the Nazi round-up and deportation of Rome’s Jews, according to a study of a documents released by the Vatican.
As Italy fell under German control during the Second World War, 1,000 Jewish Romans were rounded up and deported to Auschwitz in October 1943, where most died as the Nazis stepped up their exterminations.
