Trossachs, Scotland

Open water swimming enthusiasts pour warm water over themselves after an early morning swim in Loch Lomond. A study by the UK Dementia Research Institute has found that the blood of regular winter swimmers contains a ‘cold-shock’ protein that is not found in people who do other cold-weather exercise on dry land. This protein has been shown to slow the onset of dementia and even repair damage it causes in mice. Photograph: Jeff J Mitchell/Getty Images
