Workers across Belarus downed tools yesterday as part of a nationwide strike aimed at toppling President Lukashenko after a day of mass arrests and violence on the streets.
Svetlana Tikhanovskaya, the exiled opposition leader, called for the strike after a “People’s Ultimatum” for Mr Lukashenko to resign expired at midnight. “Our main task is to show that no one will work for the regime,” she said.
