Our justice system is a joke and I hope all those involved on the Adult Parole Board who let serial rapist Adrian Baylor out on bail, have trouble sleeping at night. Bayley was paroled in March 2010 after an 8 year minimum term of 16 counts of rape. Every member on that parole board should be outed, named, shamed and sacked.
In their defence, they say that the public has to realize that 98 per cent of violent rapists will eventually return to our streets one day, and there is no crystal ball to tell them if they will re-offend. But that's not good enough, if they had done their job properly, Jill Meagher would still be alive.
When Bayley was put into the Victorian sex offenders program for rehabilitation, he talked about how he was going to rape future victims.
And that's what needs to be addressed - rehabilitation of violent rapists is not working now, has not worked in the past, and won't work in the future and the parole board has to start doing its job properly, which is to protect the public from animals like Bayley. They don't deserve the benefit of the doubt and should be locked away until they are absolutely sure it's safe to let them out.
A judge once described Bayley as having a "gross sexual appetite" and his own parents warned police about his behaviour. One of the conditions of his bail after a brutal rape was that he must reside with his parents, but once again those with the power to do so, caved in and let him live with his girlfriend in Coburg, only minutes away from where he raped and murdered Jill Meagher.
Well done Victorian Parole Board, I hope you all see Jill's beautiful face in your dreams.
Edit June 19, 2013: Adrian Ernest Bayley has received a life sentence with a non-parole period of 35 years for the rape and murder of ABC employee Jill Meagher.
