The lawyer for a choirboy who gave evidence against the Vatican’s former third highest-ranked cardinal at his sex crimes trial has denied her client received money, after allegations that Vatican funds were secretly diverted to Australia in order to secure a conviction. The Italian newspapers La Repubblica and Corriere della Sera have reported today that one of Cardinal George Pell’s arch rivals in the Vatican, Cardinal Giovanni Angelo Becciu, is suspected of arranging for €700,000 to be wired to Australia. It was reported that the money was used to secure evidence against the Australian cardinal.
