The cost of living on Lord Howe Island for permanent residents is insane. Living in paradise doesn't come cheap.
Freight costs $700 per cubic metre, unleaded petrol $4 a
litre, power bills $1,200 a quarter.
There are approximately 382 people who live on the island permanently and only 400 tourists allowed on the island at any given time.
The Lord Howe Island Act 1953 provides that all the land on
the Island belongs to the Crown. The law does not allow freehold private
ownership. Perpetual Leases are issued to Islanders to reside on.
